General Admission Information
BridgeValley Community and Technical College adheres to an open admissions policy. It is the intent of this policy that all people should have access to higher education opportunities that align with their interest and abilities. BridgeValley follows the Community and Technical College System on residency classification for determining tuition and fees. For the full text, visit www.wvctcs.org/rulesandpolicies
Applications for admission may be completed online at www.bridgevalley.edu, or request an application be mailed by telephoning 304.205.6700.
Regular (degree-seeking) admission is available for all who have obtained a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED/TASC) diploma.
Scores from standardized tests such as the American College Test (ACT), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or ACCUPLACER are not required for admission. However, scores from one of these tests is required for financial aid eligibility and tests are used for placement and counseling purposes. If a student is applying for financial aid, one of these exams, must be taken prior to registering for classes.
NOTE: West Virginia residents are highly encouraged to take the ACT or SAT test as scores from these tests are required for certain West Virginia scholarships and grant programs including the Promise Scholarship, as well as campus-based scholarships from the college.
Admission Requirements (Admission to the College)
Degree-Seeking Admissions Requirements
Individuals interested in applying for Certificate (one-year) or Associate (two-year) Degree programs must submit the following documents to the Admissions:
- A completed BridgeValley Community and Technical College Application for Admission.
- An official high school transcript or GED/TASC scores report.
- An official transcript from each previous college or university attended. Note: Official transcripts must be mailed directly or electronically delivered to BridgeValley Community and Technical College from the issuing institution.
- ACT/SAT or other placement test (ACCUPLACER) scores. (Scores are required for financial aid and/or placement in math and English courses.)
Provisional admission may be granted for a semester to degree-seeking students whose admission, readmission, or transfer admission documentation is incomplete at the time classes begin.
If student records indicate a student does not meet regular degree-seeking admissions requirements, the student will be conditionally admitted.
If records are not received by the Division of Students Affairs by the designated time, the student’s registration may be voided. If the registration is voided, there will be no refund of tuition and fees.
NOTE: Financial aid will not be processed until all records are received.
Non-Degree Seeking Admission Requirements
Individuals who wish to enroll at BridgeValley Community and Technical College to take credit classes for personal enrichment, job improvement, or for reasons other than seeking a degree may enroll as a non-degree student. Non-degree applicants must submit the following documents to Admissions.
- A completed BridgeValley Community and Technical College application for admission. Non-Degree seeking students are not eligible for financial aid.
Non-Degree students who wish to change to the degree-seeking status must complete the necessary forms in the Admissions Department-which include the following:
- An official high school transcript or GED/TASC scores report.
- An official transcript from each previous college or university attended. (Note: Official transcripts must be mailed directly or electronically delivered to BridgeValley Community and Technical from the issuing institution.)
- ACT/SAT or other placement test (ACCUPLACER) scores. (Scores are required for placement in math and/or English courses.)
Readmission Requirements
Readmission Due to Non-Attendance
Individuals seeking readmission because of discontinued studies by not enrolling for one or more academic semesters must complete a readmission application. Students with a cumulative GPA below 2.00 will be required to meet with the Vice President of Academic Affairs prior to registering for any courses offered by BridgeValley Community and Technical College. Students who have attended other institution(s) during their absence from BridgeValley Community and Technical College will be considered transfer students. Please follow the instructions listed under “Transfer Students”. Readmitted students must follow the academic catalog in effect at the time of their readmission and are required to meet all academic standards that changed during their absence.
Readmission Due to Academic Reasons
Individuals who were required to discontinue their studies due to academic reasons and are now seeking readmission must submit a readmission application to the Academic Affairs Office with complete academic records and a narrative as indicated on the application. The student must schedule a meeting with the Vice President for Academic Affairs after submitting this information where a decision on readmission will be made and the conditions of readmission will be applied, if appropriate. Readmitted students must follow the academic catalog in effect at the time of their readmission and are required to meet all academic standards that changed during their absence.
Transfer Student Requirements
Individuals who wish to enroll at BridgeValley Community and Technical College to take credit classes for personal enrichment, job improvement, or for reasons other than seeking a degree may enroll as a non-degree student. Non-degree applicants must submit the following documents to Admissions.

Admission Requirements (Admission to Selective Programs)
Selective Admission Programs
BridgeValley offers several academic programs with limited enrollment and specific requirements for consideration of admission into those programs. The programs with selective admission are competitive and the number of students admitted to these programs is limited to assure appropriate educational services and academic excellence.
Admission Requirements (Early College High School Students)
- The student must complete a consent form signed by his/her parent and the high school principal or counselor as appropriate.
- The student must submit a completed BridgeValley Community and Technical College application for admission.
- The student must have a 2.5 high school GPA or be recommended by a counselor or a principal.
- Early College High School students must meet prerequisites for courses, which may include ACT/SAT scores, or other state-approved placement test scores.
- Early College High School students are not eligible for financial aid.
Admission Requirements (International Students)
To be guaranteed review, international applicants must have their completed application on file at least four (4) months prior to their intended date of enrollment. International students must complete the admissions criteria listed below, while also following the criteria for their specific admit type (ie. First-Time Freshman, Readmit, Transfer, etc.):
- To be guaranteed review, an international student application at least four (4) months prior to their intended date of enrollment.
- Official records of a secondary education with higher-than-average grades. Official transcripts, from all institutions, of previous college work completed. All documents must be translated to the English language. For consideration, international college transcripts must be evaluated on a course-by-course basis by an approved third-party. BridgeValley accepts all evaluations from members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
- Proof of English Proficiency is required for applicants with a native language other than English. According to BridgeValley, English Proficiency is determined based on the following criteria:
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 500 on the paper-based test, or 173 on the computer-based version, or 61 or above on the internet-based version.
- International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) score of 6.5 or above.
- Duolingo score of 90 or above.
- Cambridge English score of B2 or above.
- ACT English/Reading score of 18 or above.
- SAT ERW (2016 or later) score of 480 or above.
- Official proof of current enrollment or successful completion/graduation from English as a Second Language (ESL) course (proof must be sent directly by agency or instructor of course to be reviewed).
- Successful completion of the BridgeValley Community & Technical College equivalent of ENGL 101.
- ACCUPLACER Reading score of 252 or above and a Writing score of 250 or above.
- Additional standardized test (ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER) for placement and counseling purposes, must be taken prior to registration.
- Additional criteria and documentation are required for applicants seeking issuance of a Visa. BridgeValley Community & Technical College holds the authorization to issue F1 and M1 visas to applicants meeting the criteria.
Admission Requirements (Transient Students)
Students enrolled at another postsecondary institution wishing to enroll in courses at BridgeValley may be admitted as transient students. The transient student must submit the following:
- A completed BridgeValley Community and Technical College Application.
- A completed Transient Approval Form from their home institution.
BridgeValley Community and Technical College students who wish to enroll at another institution as a transient student should complete a BridgeValley Transient Approval Form with appropriate signature approvals.
Controlled Substance Statement
While the West Virginia Medical Cannabis Act (MCA) decriminalized the use and possession of medical cannabis for registered patients in West Virginia, under the federal law, possession of cannabis remains illegal in all fifty states. Additionally, the federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 is unchanged by state legislation of medical cannabis and prohibits the possession, use, or being under the influence of illegal drugs in the workplace.
The MCA does not require an academic program to accommodate the use of medical cannabis. Use of medical cannabis is prohibited by state and federal regulations for positions identified as safety sensitive. Therefore, drug screen vendors will NOT verify a test as negative based upon information that a physician recommended or prescribed cannabis. Medical marijuana remains a drug listed in Schedule I of the Controlled Substance Act.
Students with positive drug screens will be administratively removed from their courses and/or programs where drug screening is required. Students may remain enrolled in non-program specific courses for which there are no drug screen requirements.
