The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate Program prepares students to provide basic life support (BLS) emergency medical care in prehospital and out-of-hospital settings. The program is designed to meet the National EMS Education Standards and aligns with West Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services (WVOEMS) requirements and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification standards. The curriculum provides comprehensive instruction in patient assessment, airway management, trauma care, medical emergencies, obstetrics, pediatrics, behavioral emergencies, EMS operations, and professional practice. Instruction is delivered through a combination of classroom lecture, skills laboratory, high and low-fidelity simulation, and supervised clinical and field experiences. Students develop cognitive knowledge, psychomotor skills, and affective behaviors necessary to function as competent entry-level EMTs. Clinical education includes structured experiences in hospital emergency departments and prehospital field settings under the supervision of qualified preceptors. Students must successfully complete all required didactic, laboratory, clinical, and field components to demonstrate competency in patient care and decision-making. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification examination. Successful certification allows graduates to apply for state EMT licensure. The EMT program supports workforce development needs by preparing graduates for employment with ambulance services, fire departments, emergency response agencies, industrial safety teams, and healthcare systems. The program also serves as a foundational pathway for advanced EMS education, including Advanced EMT and Paramedic programs.
