Program Description

The Associate in Science degree Civil Engineering Technology (ASCET) is a two-year program that prepares graduates for employment in construction, water resources, public works, structural detailing and design, environmental studies, mining development and related fields. The program stresses materials, surveying, structures, water resources, soil mechanics, construction and highways. The graduate is prepared to support engineers various areas of civil engineering.

Typical assignments include preparing plans, field/lab testing of construction materials, layout and inspection of construction projects and mining development. The graduate might also work under the supervision of an engineer performing basic design calculations in highways, structures, hydraulics/hydrology and soils. Completion of this program also qualifies the graduate to enter directly into the plus-two Bachelor of Science program Engineering Technology-Civil emphasis at West Virginia University Institute of Technology.

Program Educational Objectives

 

Recent graduates of the ASCET program will be able to achieve the following career and professional accomplishments:

 

  1. Demonstrate ability to apply principles of mathematics and applied science to perform technical calculations and solve the types of technical problems commonly encountered in civil engineering technology careers
  2. Function effectively in a laboratory setting by operating technical equipment, making measurements, recording results in suitable form, critically examining experimental results, and properly reporting on experimental results.
  3. Demonstrate ability to use modern computational tools, including scientific calculators, computers, and software for technical problem solving
  4. Demonstrate the ability to utilize computer software applications used in civil engineering technology such as CAD programs and supplements, spreadsheets, word processing, and industry-standard applications software
  5. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively by oral and written means
  6. Demonstrate the interpersonal skills needed to function effectively in a team environment.
  7. Demonstrate ability to Use manual techniques and industry-standard CADD packages to produce drawings in accepted form for projects in civil engineering and related fields.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to Conduct standardized field and laboratory tests to investigate the properties of aggregates, soils and concrete in accordance with standards set out by ASTM, ACI and other relevant codes.
  9. Demonstrate mastery in using using traditional and current electronic surveying equipment and accepted surveying methods to obtain andrecord measurements necessary for engineering and construction surveys.
  10. Demonstrate mastery in performing coordinate geometry calculations manually and with the use of related surveying software to derive control and mapping data, earthwork quantities and other required information.
  11. Demonstrate the ability to analyze forces and stresses in elementary steel and reinforced concrete systems and perform related calculations in conformance with AISC and ACI specifications.
  12. Demonstrate the ability to apply technical concepts to analyze problems involving water resources, soils, and highways and perform basic computations in these areas in accordance with standard practice

 

Course outcomes are assessed by exit examinations in each course. Program outcomes are assessed in designated courses. General education outcomes are assessed through the General Education Portfolio.

  5. Demonstrate an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility, including a respect for diversity, to employers and to society at large.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively by oral and written means.
  7. Demonstrate the interpersonal skills needed to function effectively in a team environment.
  8. Use manual techniques and industry-standard CADD packages to produce drawings in accepted form for civil engineering technology projects.

Careers in Civil Engineering Technology

Typical job titles include: Lead Engineering Technician, Assistant Project Engineer, and Design Technician, Surveying Coordinator, Inspector, Lab Manager, Surveying/Party Chief, Survey Technician, Estimator, Traffic/Highway Technician, Environmental Technician.

Transfer Baccalaureate Options

Graduates of the program may transfer to Bachelor of Sciences program in Engineering Technology-Civil. Advanced Placement Credit for High School/Career-Technical Center/College Programs High school level drafting, surveying, or construction subjects are not necessary for entrance into the Civil Engineering Technology program. Beginning subjects are part of the program. The student who has completed such vocational courses, however, may receive advanced placement. Articulation Edge agreements are in place with  various vocational-technical centers. Advanced placement is also available to the student with prior college experience.
