Program Description

Note: Students enrolled in this program MUST submit to and pass drug screening tests – one prior to beginning any practicums and/or clinicals, and one random test during the same semester as any practicum and/or clinicals. Students will sign an agreement for this requirement which will outline the details.

The Youth Development concentration offers students the opportunity to further their knowledge and skills in modern techniques geared toward the prevention, recovery, and rehabilitation of at-risk and incarcerated youth. The program prepares students to implement person-centered life skill plans, design and monitor daily activities, provide support services to youth, based on their individual service needs, and provide crisis prevention/intervention when needed.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will:

  • Combine interdisciplinary knowledge and skills regarding appropriate interventions in service delivery for children, adolescents, and families.
  • Integrate humanistic principles, values, and attitudes serving individuals impacted by SMIs, SUDs, and SEDs including trauma and/or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
  • Synthesize primary and secondary information, including data gathered from individuals, environmental characteristics, and appropriate literature sources. 
  • Evaluate individual, family, and environmental needs, barriers, and supports through application of Psychiatric Rehabilitation. 
  • Acquire proficiency in non-violent crisis prevention and intervention in accordance with the national standard. 
  • Incorporate DSM-V and ICD-10 criteria in utilization of a multitude of assessments and development of individualized treatment plans

Program Assessment

Program Outcomes are assessed in targeted courses on specific assignments, as well as the institution’s General Education Assessment.

Careers

Graduates of this degree program may expect to find employment in juvenile detention centers, residential youth programs, programs affiliated with the judicial system, special education programs including after school programs and adolescent behavioral health care centers.
