Program Description:
The Fire Science AAS program is designed to provide students with a high-quality, comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of fire science for both entry-level firefighters and current fire service professionals seeking to further their knowledge and skills. Topics of study include fire behavior, hazmat operation and awareness, legal aspects of emergency services, evidence collection, forensic photography and code, and inspection. graduates of the AAS program will be able to recognize, analyze, and address legal, technical, and personnel issues that fire officers routinely encounter. This program of study follows the curriculum recommended by the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) of the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Academy (NFA).
Program Learning Outcomes:
- Apply strategies, tactics, and Incident Command/Incident Management skills to emergency incidents.
- Application of management and leadership principles to Fire Department operations, inter-agency cooperation, and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Development of skills and education for employment and advancement in Fire and Emergency Services.
- Identify, examine, and apply current and emerging concepts and practices in Fire and Emergency Services.
- Exhibit an understanding of basic principles of safety related to firefighter life safety initiatives and focusing on the need for cultural and behavioral change in Fire and Emergency Services.
- Identify the knowledge/skills required for operation, testing, inspection and maintenance of automated fire protection and suppression systems as well as operation at facilities equipped with these systems.
